The interactive software program, Impromptu, is available for use on all computer platforms. Already successfully used in college and high school music labs, Impromptu is designed to help students become active and engaged music makers - listeners, performers, and creators. Students learn how to value, understand, reflect and build upon their own powerful musical intuitions.

Impromptu is coupled with the ground breaking music text, Developing Musical Intuitions (Bamberger, Oxford Press, 2000). The project-oriented approach to learning brings software and text together in an environment where students carry out composition-like activities to discover and build on their own understanding of of music. However, be advised that the version of Impromptu packaged with the published text is already obsolete (running only on the Macintosh OS9). Users should take advantage of the updated version, JDK 1.5 compatible Impromptu, which is available for free download, here. It is a Java program and runs in any OS with a 1.4 or higher Java Environment. It has been tested in Windows and Macintosh OS X.

To get started with the projects and the software, you may download an abbreviated version of "Developing Musical Intuitions." The mini-text includes documentation along with projects for composing tunes and making percussion accompaniments. The projects in the mini-text are most effectively used in this order:

  1. Reconstructing Tunes
  2. Composing Tunes
  3. Making Meter
